Karasev is an easy and spicy south Indian tea time snack recipe prepared using besan/gram flour. Traditional method of making pepper karasev.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Gram flour
  • ¼ cup Rice flour
  • ½ tsp Jeera
  • 1 tbsp Pepper (crushed)
  • ½ tsp Hing
  • 1 tsp Chilly powder
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric powder
  • ¾ tsp Salt (or as needed)
  • 1 tbsp Hot oil / Butter / Ghee
  • Oil (for frying)
  • Water (as needed)

Instructions

  • Crush pepper into small pieces. Don’t powder it.
  • In a mixing bowl, add 1 cup of gram flour, ¼ cup of rice flour, ½ tsp jeera, crushed pepper, Asafoetida, chilly powder, turmeric powder, salt, hot oil/ butter and mix well.
  • Add water little by little and make a smooth dough.

Method 1

  • Fill the dough in a sev mould.
  • Heat oil in a pan and press the dough in the hot oil.
  • Fry Karasev in medium flame until it turns crispy.
  • Once it cools down, break it into pieces and store it in an airtight container.

Method 2

  • Take the dough and press it in hot oil using a skimmer/ holed spoon. This is the original method of making Karasev.
  • Fry Karasev in medium flame until it turns crispy.
  • Once it cools down, store it in an airtight container.
